Why are tools such as SalesForce, Monday.com, Hubspot, Excel and many other widely used products so powerful and popular? Because they are easy to use and agile and they give you the freedom to create and customise what you want, whenever you want to meet your needs
It is directly because of this ‘ease of use’ that the risk of human error is introduced. Regularly, these systems don’t check to see if you have entered a number in a text field or, if you have forgotten to enter any data at all. They won’t know if you have accidentally entered the same information twice. These sorts of basic errors only increase as the data gets bigger and the longer, over time, it is used.
I was asked to do what should have been a simple move of some data from a company’s old customer system to a new one. Though the data was large, the information was not complex, in fact it was downright simple. Should have been dead easy except it wasn’t. The source data was a mess! The errors that had been entered into the source system over time were everywhere. Duplicates and missing elements were common but so were multiple instances of typographical gibberish.
